Tonight

The snow has melted, but Rachel is raging.
Tonight
tall trees around us are shaking,
the forecasts give me a fright.

The birds had been awfully
quick and hungry these days.
They flew almost literally
into your face

when you walked out the door,
surrounding your feet on the ground
when you were spreading their feed – and before.
The sheep were just standing around

in sheltered places. I almost pray. Please:
That these were not natural red alerts,
that neither animals nor trees,
nor the house nor us will get hurt.

But what do I think about the mouse-
like animal seen this morning in the house?

Not tonight.
